What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that supports the brain in processing distressing experiences, so they become less emotionally activating. It uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) to assist natural memory processing and reduce the intensity of trauma-related responses.
How EMDR Therapy Works
- History & Assessment – We review your experiences, current challenges, and determine whether EMDR is appropriate.
- Preparation – Grounding and stabilisation strategies are introduced to support emotional safety and readiness.
- Target Identification – We identify specific memories, beliefs, sensations, or triggers linked to distress.
- Active Reprocessing – Bilateral stimulation is used to support the brain in processing these experiences and reducing emotional intensity.
- Installation & Body Scan – More adaptive beliefs are strengthened, and residual tension or activation is identified and processed.
- Closure & Integration – Each session is stabilised with grounding, and processing is consolidated to support integration between sessions.
- Re-evaluation – Progress is reviewed at the start of each session, and next steps are guided by readiness and clinical judgment.
Who Can Benefit
Adults experiencing trauma, PTSD, or distress linked to past experiences. EMDR may also be suitable for individuals exploring trauma-focused work or those who have not responded to other approaches.
Our Approach
We provide trauma-informed EMDR within a structured, paced framework. Therapy is guided by clinical judgment, collaboration, and attention to emotional and physiological readiness.
Safety & Suitability
Safety and readiness are assessed before and throughout EMDR therapy. Sessions are paced according to individual capacity, stability, and clinical considerations.
